For most travelers, yes. Ha Long Bay is about 2.5 hours from Hanoi, so a day trip leaves only 4–5 hours on the water. An overnight cruise adds kayaking, cave visits, sunset and sunrise on the bay, and a much calmer pace.

Ha Long Bay is the famous UNESCO site with the most caves and cruise options. Neighboring Lan Ha Bay is quieter, with small beaches and excellent kayaking. Many cruises visit both.
