1. Traveling Around Vietnam Method : Taxi

Taking a taxi in Vietnam is unbelievably cheap compared to Australia. Especially when traveling with children, air-conditioned taxis can be the best choice for shorter distances. Stick with reputable taxi companies to avoid scams – Vinasun and Mai Linh are very well-known. They use meters all the time, so no need to haggle. We’ve also used some smaller companies, but we were very selective and made sure they would use meters. Having data on your mobile phone will be very helpful because you can use GPS to track your location and look up any addresses or directions for the driver if there are language issues (which is often the case). One taxi driver we encountered had reasonably good English and offered to take us on a day trip for 800,000 dong. That’s less than $50 AUD – anywhere we wanted to go. But for longer journeys, the three options below might even be more cost-effective.

2. Traveling Around Vietnam Method : Bus

Getting to other cities in Vietnam is easy with reliable bus companies. We used SinhTourist, which has sleeper buses (reclining seats) for you to relax and doze off, especially if you don’t have little ones jumping on you. They not only travel throughout Vietnam but can also take you to Cambodia (from Ho Chi Minh City) at a very cheap and fast rate. You can get to Mui Ne, a city known for its sand dunes, beautiful beaches, and kiteboarding, in just 8 hours. All for only 99,000 dong per person, equivalent to $5.80 AUD or $4.60 USD. Or you can cross to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in just 6.5 hours through Ho Chi Minh City for 189,000 dong ($11.12 AUD). Very cheap! Stick to daytime bus travel. Overnight bus travel is unsafe because of bumpy roads, construction, and drivers pushing their limits. If you want to travel at night, the next option is an excellent choice.

3. Traveling Around Vietnam Method: Train

Traveling by train is another fast and cost-effective way to tour Vietnam. Train services run from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi – and you can even get to Hong Kong! It’s faster than a bus, so it’s better for longer trips. Traveling overnight is a great way to save on accommodation and long-distance travel simultaneously. However, always try to buy the soft sleeper cabin with 4 beds for more comfort. By doing this, your family can have a cabin to yourselves. If you only need 3 beds, buy the fourth one; it’s cheaper and gives you more space for your luggage. Having a soft sleeper means you get a thicker mattress compared to the hard sleeper cabin, which has 6 beds. If you have to buy hard sleeper tickets, buy all 6 seats. We traveled during peak time, and all we could get was a hard sleeper ticket. The two lower beds were taken by two Vietnamese women and lots of kids, leaving us without enough space for our luggage. So, we had the four upper beds (3 on one side). It was a very challenging night, especially since my toddler decided she wanted the entire bed to herself, and it took a week for my stiff neck to stop hurting. Ouch. Unlike buses, traveling by train overnight is much safer and highly recommended.

4. Traveling Around Vietnam Method : Air

As long as you book well in advance, traveling between cities can be very fast and affordable. I found ticket prices as low as $25 per seat, but it’s silly to book so late, and the price goes up. If you’re trying to book at the last minute, you’ll have a hard time. If you’re traveling a particularly long distance (e.g., Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi), you should take a flight, especially with little ones. But for short distances, skip the plane. When you fly, you’ll miss so many fantastic sights. Everyone (2.5, 10, 13 years old) and my partner and I enjoyed our bus trips, which was a big surprise. Being able to stretch out and lie down makes this very easy and comfortable, as you can enjoy everything Vietnam has to offer. You can fly around Vietnam with airlines such as Jetstar Asia, AirAsia, VietJet Air, or Vietnam Airlines.

5. Traveling Around Vietnam Method : Cyclo (Xích Lô)

Cyclos are cute, bicycle-powered vehicles with a seat in the front and a driver at the back. They can be a lot of fun, especially at night – you have to take the whole family for a ride for an hour to admire Vietnam’s lively nightlife. Vietnamese people really make use of the light here, and it’s beautiful! However, arrange a reliable cyclo driver through your hotel or tour company to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride.

6. Traveling Around Vietnam Method : Boat

From dragon boats to sailing adventures, Vietnam offers various ways to explore this beautiful country on the water. Dragon boats can take you on leisurely cruises along the Perfume River or transport you to one of Vietnam’s many historical and tourist attractions, including the tombs of kings and bustling markets from the past. Traveling by junk boat is not exactly cheap, and it’s best to avoid budget boat trips because your safety is crucial. However, it’s an unforgettable experience to climb aboard a small boat and spend one or two nights exploring the magnificent and enchanting Halong Bay. It’s one of those things you should have on your bucket list, and if you don’t do it on your next visit, be sure to include it on the list for the visit after that.
