History and Background

The Bang Lang Stork Sanctuary was established in 1983 by Mr. Bay Co, a local resident. In 1983, a herd of storks landed and nested in a corner of his garden. After a while, they left, only to return the following year in greater numbers. Since then, the storks have made this place their permanent home. The sanctuary got its name “Bang Lang,” which means “Crape Myrtle” in Vietnamese, from the trees that once lined the road leading to the sanctuary, known for their beautiful purple flowers that bloom in the summer. Although many of these trees have been cut down, the name has endured among locals and visitors.
